The Azores
These 9 volcanic islands were discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century and are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 1.600km from Lisbon and 2.454km from North America.
The archipelago is clustered into three groups:
1) the Eastern Group includes Santa Maria and Sao Miguel;
2) the Central Group is composed by Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial;
3) and the Western Group integrates Corvo and Flores.
The Capital of Sao Miguel Island is Ponta Delgada, here people speak Portuguese and the official currency is the Euro.
Sao Miguel
On this island, it is difficult to feel bored! Here there are 29 marked hiking trails from 2.8km to 15km, most of them around 5km. So, there are options for all kinds of people. They are all surrounded by our beautiful green landscape however, in the summer there is a color transformation with Hydrangeas prevailing all around the island together with the yellow flower of the Hedychium gardnerianum.
For Bikers, there are several routes for different disciplines, from Enduro to Road or Cross Country all with alternatives for different levels of fitness.
Sea sports such as Surf, Diving, Fishing, or Yachting are naturally available either for professionals or to have a first experience. Just as a matter of curiosity, our beaches have black sand and the ocean temperature can be a pleasant surprise, ranging from 17ºC (63ºF) in the Winter to 25ºC (77ºF) in the Summer. With these temperatures, it is possible to Surf without a wetsuit, a wonderful and rare experience in Europe.
There are more options in what concerns enjoying a few days in the Azores but regarding unique activities, it is mandatory to add the hot springs and baths with water at 39ºC (102.2ºF), which is a very relaxing experience and can be done at night!
Finally, gastronomy is very rich and made mostly with local products. From bread to fish, to meat, to fruit, to wine and sweets, the best thing to do is to try everything and think about regaining weight after the holidays!
The Atlantic
In this part of the Ocean, we are lucky to have an ecosystem with unique characteristics, here is possible to see 20 species of cetaceans, some are residents and others pass through in their migration routes.
It is possible to observe whales, namely Blue whales which can be easily spotted at the end of the winter while Sperm whales, Sei whales, and Bearded whales are frequent in the summer.
As resident species, we have common Dolphins and common Bottlenose dolphins, with which it is possible to have a swim experience!
Sao Miguel is undoubtedly a special place for unique experiences and therefore also for Unique Days. So this is our starting point to propose, plan and provide bespoke weddings and events in the Azores.
